Artist Statement – Antigoni Kavatha

Antigoni Kavvatha is a visual artist whose practice is rooted in a deep engagement with nature. Drawing inspiration from the organic world, her works abstract forms, colors, and spatial relationships—particularly through the recurring motif of trees. These trees exist between life and death, some dormant, others marked by arson, lightning, or drought, serving as metaphors for resilience and decay.

Her ongoing fascination with shadows plays a central role in her compositions. In Kavvatha’s work, shadows are not simply allusions, but protagonists—forming large, dreamlike landscapes that reflect narrative tension and introspection. These projected images serve as mirrors of memory and imagination.

Kavvatha resists the constraints of a singular visual identity. Instead, she embraces constant transformation, allowing current events, personal reflections, and socio-political conditions to shape her creative direction. Her most recent body of work consists of collage-based paintings that merge digital and print media, archival research, and personal photography. These pieces construct a layered, timeless terrain, revealing a parallel world—familiar yet unsettling, immediate yet inconceivable.

By working across both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, Psoma moves fluidly between intuitive and methodical approaches. She frequently incorporates archival sources—from folklore, poetry, and contemporary narratives—allowing material and concept to inform each other symbiotically.

Psoma does not aim to depict external visual reality as an end in itself. Rather, she uses it as a starting point to evoke internal states—juxtapositions of tension, memory, and form. Her artistic language constructs an introspective cosmos, where oppositions like chaos and order, vulnerability and strength, coalesce within the framework of a contemporary female gaze.
