Artist Statement – Ariadni Vitastali

Ariadni Vitastali (b. 1970) is a Greek visual artist based in northern Greece. She holds degrees from the École Supérieure d’Art et Design Saint-Étienne and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Her practice examines the dynamic intersection of mythology, gesture, and spatial composition, drawing from ancient Greek and Roman narratives as well as the visual language of classical ceramics.

Vitastali’s work explores the thresholds between harmony and disorder, grace and rawness, through vivid and impulsive mark-making. Her use of oil sticks and forceful strokes introduces a visceral energy to her compositions, reflecting a continual negotiation between beauty and provocation, form and rupture.

Central to her work is the feminine body—portrayed not only as a subject but as a vessel of emotion and myth. Vitastali reimagines historical iconography through a contemporary lens, crafting intimate dialogues between tradition and modernity, aggression and desire, structure and chaos.
